EU and BiH: Together for Stronger Rule of Law

EU4Justice Project Ms Sanela Tunović, Key Expert for Reporting, Communication and Visibility and Mr Adi Delić, Key Local Expert- Criminal Law participated in the Round Table discussion “EU and BiH: Together for Stronger Rule of Law – an Insight into the Rule of Law Reform in BiH through the Prism of EU Projects”.

This event was organised on the occasion of the International Fraud Awareness Week (18-22 November 2019), marked for the first time in Bosnia and Herzegovina,  with the goal to present current bilateral and regional EU projects and discuss the importance of the Rule of Law reform.

The discussion included citizens, professionals and the academic community in discussing the relevance of progress of the reform processes in this area and present examples of project activities supported by the European Union in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The key phrases discussed during the Round Table were: “rule of law” and “political will,” and how these two phrases are interpreted as a part of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s reform of the judiciary.

Ms Tunović stressed that EU4justice is working with the entire BiH criminal justice chain. The project encourages interdisciplinary approach among judges, lawyers, law enforcement agencies and court experts. With the aim of tracking the illicit proceeds from serious crimes more effectively so that prosecutors can file indictments that will lead to verdicts. EU4Justice’s ultimate objective is the added value for citizens: the judiciary achieves measurable outcomes on fraud issues.

EU projects in the field of Rule of Law reform support BiH authorities in the harmonisation process concerning the EU acquis and in addressing reform recommendations from the Commission Opinion, Country Reports, and other country-specific assessments.

The Rule of Law is one of EU’s founding principles. A properly functioning judicial system and an effective fight against corruption are of paramount importance for citizens and condition for BiH to move forward in the EU integration process.
