On 25 June, EU4Justice held its first online workshop “Cyber Criminality Investigations”, which was attended by 20 participants. The goal of the workshop was to provide an insight into the methodology to investigate cybercrimes and discuss best practices. The workshop was tailor-made based on replies to a preliminary questionnaire which was sent to the participants in advance, during the preparation phase. The key speaker was Ms Emmanuelle Legrand, former investigative judge specialised in cybercrime at the judicial court of Paris and currently French regional liaison magistrate in South-Eastern Europe.
Ms Legrand presented the judicial perspective on challenges and best practices concerning Cybercrime investigations; the challenging evolution of cybercrime and other major issues faced by prosecutors/investigators. Some of the key issues presented and discussed are:
- Juridiction
- Encryptions
- Access to electronic evidence that is by nature highly volatile and invisible to the untrained eye
- Collecting and handling electronic evidence
- Mutual legal assistance tools and international initiatives
Ms Legrand enriched the discussion with specific examples of investigations on cybercrime.
Participants at the workshop were prosecutors, judges and representatives of Law Enforcement Agencies.
This workshop was jointly organised with CEST FBIH and CEST RS confirming once again successful and fruitful cooperation between the project and the respective CESTs.
This workshop represented the first phase of exchanges of experience in this field. Phase II is under preparation.
